A thick overcast sat un-moving over the peninsula for a couple of hours during the late afternoon, while to the north and south lay blue skies and sunshine. Facing west, some 28 miles away off-shore the Isles of Scilly were visible silhouetted against the skyline. In the exceptionally clear air, the distinctive, jagged outlines were sharply etched against sunlight filtering through gaps in the clouds many miles further beyond, reddened by distance and atmospheric absorption.
