A fine end to a bright sunny day after almost three weeks of nearly continuous gale force winds, leaden overcast and rain.

Monterey Pine Sketch, 19th November, 2017

Graphite on paper, apprx. 7.5 x 10 cm

A little sketch of one of the Monterey pines in a stand a short walk down towards Kenidjack. Small sketches like this are useful preparation for more intimate studies exploring a given form in the landscape. These more highly finished pencil or ink studies combined with colour studies  are then used to construct elements appearing within larger scale pieces completed in the studio.

Towards the Cape, September 18th, 2017, 4.20pm

With the coming of the autumnal equinox, the sun is well into its southwards traverse of the western horizon out over the Atlantic. As autumn progresses and the sun descends further in elevation each day, the glitter path on the ocean becomes ever more intense, dissolving the landscape in its shimmering, coruscating glare.

Sunrise & Sunset

Following a run of poor weather and  heavy showers overnight, this morning dawned clear to the west over the Atlantic, while a line of slow moving squalls refused to budge from inland blocking the rising sun. Not for the first time, cloud towards the east had frustrated my attempts to paint early morning sunlight falling on the cape.  But perseverance eventually pays off ; this time a brief gap in the clouds allowed just enough light to fall on the landscape for a few moments, and I was able to quickly touch in the effect, having completed the initial blocking in of the sketch. As I finished, a shower passing overhead produced just enough rain to generate a brilliant rainbow, cloud and rainbow marching together out over the ocean towards the Scilly Isles.
