With little respite from the rain of the past 2 weeks or so, the stream coursing down the valley floor has become much faster flowing, leading to undercutting of some of the stream banks. While not yet high enough to overflow, another lengthy period of heavy rain will almost certainly lead to some flooding, hopefully not as severe as the winter of 2012-13, when there was extensive damage to property. As I set up to paint in the rapidly fading light I noticed the sodden bodies of two shrews, locked together in death on the muddy ground. A reminder of the violent struggles for survival that play out unseen and unheard.
