It’s been just over a year since I last painted from this spot ( in summer sunshine ), so I thought if would be interesting to re-visit the scene on a cloudy, but clear day. There are very few ‘long views’ down the Penwith coastline and not much chance to make play with atmospheric perspective, apart from the Isles of Scilly which can be seen on a clear day, the Brissons just offshore, or views towards Lands End which is about 5 miles away from here. It’s endlessly surprising how their perceived colours change throughout the day — this depending on the clarity of the atmosphere, the state of the weather, and the direction and type of light.

Very unsettled weather continues, as does the wind, making it quite awkward to paint. This painting landed in the dirt twice. Despite the spring wild flowers now making an appearance on the coast paths it certainly doesn’t feel like mid-May.
